Exploration of Design Strategies and
            Techniques for Large Scale Projects

   $275
Kenneth von Roenn
9:00am-4:00pm, Logan Center for the Arts

With the development of new technologies in the production of artistic glass for architecture,  artists now have a broader range of techniques at their disposal to address larger and more complex design challenges.
These new type of projects require a different set of design strategies because of the increased scale and the different production processes.
The workshop will consist of a presentation on these new technologies and how they can be used for large scale projects.  The attendees will develop, with guidance, conceptual designs from a selection of several potential projects.  The session will conclude with a group presentation and discussion by the class of one another’s design development solutions.
Students are encouraged to bring the tools (including computers) they prefer to work with for designing, as well as sketch books/pads, tracing paper, architectural scale, pencils/erasers. Computer skills are not necessary, though they will be beneficial to those adept in working with Photoshop, Illustrator, Revit, SketchUp, etc.
It is anticipated that the designs developed during the workshop will be suitable for presentation to prospective clients as demonstrations of the potential of glass for large architectural projects.

Amy Valuck
Advanced Lead Techniques
   $185
Amy Valuck
8:00am – 12:00pm, Logan Center for the Arts

This workshop is intended for students who have had some experience in fabricating windows with lead came and wish to expand their skills. Learn techniques for fabricating and altering your own custom cames to be used with very thick or uneven glass, and how to successfully integrate thin and thick pieces of glass within the same panel.

Troy Moody
Kiln-formed Glass for
Architectural/Stained Glass

   $275
Troy Moody
9:00am-4:00pm,
Located at and Sponsored by Ed Hoy's International, Warrenton, IL
(transportation from Logan Center provided)

After more then 15 years working with kiln-formed glass, Troy Moody has developed a style and process for creating his personal artwork incorporating numerous techniques into each piece. This workshop is intended to focus on the idea of fused and kiln-formed glass that will be incorporated in architectural settings, in autonomous flat panels, or within traditional stained glass panels
Troy has been teaching kiln formed glass classes since 2009 when he began an artist residency at the Mesa Art Center. Numerous examples of Troy’s autonomous work using these techniques will be available to view and discuss as well as examples of various other techniques such as pattern bars, torch work, vitrographs and bubble grids. He will gladly share encouraging tips for successfully incorporating numerous techniques into your own studio work. Printed literature outlining all relevant information including required materials, firing schedules, suppliers and instructions will be available to all attendees.
Our sponsor for this workshop is Ed Hoy’s International, the largest wholesale art glass distributor in North America.  The company is generously supplying the workshop space and all materials, as well as transportation to and from their site (about 40 minutes from the University of  Chicago). Workshop participants are encouraged to visit the Ed Hoy’s website to set up an account if you think you may be making purchases at the time of the workshop.  Ed Hoy’s cannot sell merchandise to individuals without an account.

Sasha Zhitneva
Lamination
   $185
Sasha Zhitneva
1:00pm – 5:00pm, Logan Center for the Arts
For a glass artist, lamination opens many possibilities for merging different glass techniques in creating a two-dimensional panel. This workshop will present a new method of combining the functionality of modern architectural glazing substrates, such as insulate glass and safety glass, with the tradition of stained glass artistry. The lamination technique offers a practical application for stained glass designs that can be efficiently combined with acid etching, painting, and abrasive etching processes to provide an economical architectural-design solution.
Bringing together glass painting, fused glass, copper foil or lead techniques allows the artist to overcome certain constrains imposed by a particular medium and create work in a format that suits an artist’s needs on any given project. For example, relieved from its role as a carrying structure, a lead line can be used a graphic element, layering colored glass enriches the palette and expands it beyond what is offered in fusing compatible glass, etc. Various laminating adhesives by Bohle and corresponding processes are going to be covered as well as technical aspects that have to be taken into account for constructing structurally solid work. Students will understand the theory behind the lamination process and possible field applications; and, Practical: A “hands-on” lamination application combining stained glass and a safety glass substrate using Verifix©  2K Silicone.
